1.I designed a pineapple with the lighter body and the green top because I thought it would be cool with the broken pieces of ceramics. My subject is a pineapple
2. I found at first it was very difficult to have random pieces in my design because it is smaller but i ended up cutting clay to the shape of my design 3. I would change the color of the pieces around it because I feel like the white blends in with the grout and doesn't let the pineapple pop. I would have chosen black to have a better contrast

1. I was inspired by the installation project of the butterflies that we did and decided flowers in the background would make it more complete
2.I rolled out the clay using the slab roller and placed it on the tray that I wanted with plastic wrap and let it dry until I could pull it off. Then I painted it with the sgraffito and traced out my design with a pencil and started carving. Throwing on the wheelI don’t have a picture of my finished piece because after I was done throwing on the wheel I never got to finish them as I was working on other pieces
1. To throw a piece on the wheel you first have to get a ball of clay and wedge it so there aren’t any air bubbles in it. Then you have to center it on the wheel by pulling it up and down. After you put your thumb in the center to create a dip and pull up slowly. 2. The difficulties I had throwing on the wheel were centering and locking my elbows so they wouldn’t move 3. I found when I got it centered pulling up to create the cylinder was successful Installation project1. An installation is art that the viewer is able to interact with and be a part of
2. The finished product was nice and I like the design and colors we ended up choosing. 3. I would have changed the size as it took some time to finish in a group and would take even longer individually 4. Marissa and I each carved a wing and attached them to the body and we each painted a wing with orange and black acrylic paint. Figuartive piece - clay1. To make the figurative piece from clay first I started with a pinch pot and widened it to make the shell. Then I cut the fins and attached them to the shell and made a smaller pinch pot for the head. I fired it and then painted the design on with watercolor.
2. It was successful with the shape and design on the shell of the fins. 3. I had difficulties with the shell holding up the rest of the body as it fell apart at first. It was difficult to keep the clay the right softness to be able to keep molding. finished sgraffito1.To make the sgraffito piece first you make a mold of the shape you want, I made a tray. After making the shape, I waited until it was dry enough to paint with the black underglaze and painted on 3 coats. After that was dry I carved out my design and fired it. After it was fired the first time I touched up any areas with black underglaze, put clear glaze over it and fired it again.
2. The sgraffito pieces are fun to make but once you carve there is no going back 3. My piece was successful with the design and how there are certain areas that fade from black to white. If I were to do it again I would carve some areas more detailed so there is no grey area. finished pit fire1. To make a pit fire you first make a smooth piece that goes outward so the materials that will be burned can stick on. After you make your piece you need to bisque fire it. After it is bisque fires you add different materials that can be burned hat will add color and needs to be wrapped. You put the piece in a fire and let the materials burn and then apply a sealant after it has cooled down.
2. I feel like my piece was successful because of the colors created by the materials. If I were to make it again I would make it go out more and then come back in at the top. 3.i burned cat food on the bottom to create a dark bottom, the acid mixed with salt to created an orangey pink color. I added a piece of wood on the inside to give a Smokey look. In progress paper mache - butterflies1. Marissa and I worked on this monarch butterfly and we each did a wing separately and connected them to the body together.
2. First we had to create the shape to lay the paper mache onto. We used cardboard for the wings and paper for the body. After that we covered them with paper. To make the paper mache paste we mixed flour and water, ripped pieces of newspaper, dipped them into the paste and applied it on the mold. After the wings and body were dried we hot glued them together and applied a layer of paper towels to ensure they wereconnected. 3.One difficulty was connecting the wings and making sure they stayed on. Also it is difficult making sure the paper towels stayed smooth. A success is the shape of the body and the wings and the proportions. Tripod Mug1. To make the tripod mug you first had to roll out a slab of clay to the measurements you want for your mug. Once it is rolled and cute. You attach the two sides to make a cylinder. Then you slowly form one circular end to a triangle slowly connecting the points to make legs. After that is mostly dried and able to hold the weight of the mug, I carved out the design I wanted. I first used a needle tool to get the shape of my designs then a ribbon tool to make it more prominent. After it was fired a first time I added glaze and fired again.
2. I chose not to add a handle because I wanted to use it as a makeup brush holder. 3. I found the size and carving of my piece to be successful because it was what I had initially wanted. If I were to make it again i would make it more round and use a different color instead of the burgundy because it was very streaky. 4. A clay slab is a rolled flat piece of clay Pit-fire in progress piece1. I am using coiling to create this piece. Coiling is done by rolling clay into cylindrical strips and added on top of a circular base and smoothed together.
2. It is difficult to make the coils even which makes the piece uneven and it has also been difficult to get the piece to the size I originally had planned. I have been successful with the piece as it has gone out the amount I originall planned for. 3. I plan to make the piece even all around and then smooth it with a spoon to get ready for the pit fire. My design has changed as the size of my base created a piece that was larger than I planned for so I decided to make my piece the bottom half of my original plan. |
